In October, when I was driving back from visiting Edgar Allan Poe’s grave, I stopped in Harmony, PA. It’s a quaint little town with decorations that look like they came straight from Cracker Barrel. One of the houses was adjourned with a mustache, which made the windows look like two eyes.
Harmony Inn is a historic house owned by a well-known banker, railroad executive, and mill operator, Austin Pearce, in 1856. The house is also considered by historians to have been one of the firsts in the area with indoor plumbing.
Unfortunately, Pearce’s railroad business went belly up, and he sold his home to the Ziegler family. They turned the house into a hotel and saloon, building the second floor in the early 1900s. It operated as a hotel named the Ziegler Hotel for a long time. It was sold several more times to different owners and went under various names, such as Manor House and Harmony Hilton. Harmony Inn was recently purchased in 2013 by Bob and Jodi McCafferty, who bought it from previous owners Bob and Carl, who converted it into a craft beer bar in 1985.
There are also ghost stories about Harmony Inn. It is said that people see a girl in white roaming the hallways and an older woman peering from the window. There is nothing to worry about as most of the time, the ghosts come off as friendly, as guests would often report feeling a warm sensation.
I intended to eat there but could have planned this out better. I should have checked the wait time or made a reservation.
If I go back there in the future, I plan on doing a follow-up post. Also, I will definitely be sure to check the wait time in advance.
