Key West, Florida, especially downtown, is bustling with tourists. There are many restaurants, shops, and lodging options. Lodging includes several luxurious hotels and resorts. Among them is La Concha, which opened in 1926, and its owner was Carl Aubuchon. Many visitors over the years have come through the hotel, but a few never checked out.
Ernest Hemingway
A previous article I mentioned about Ernest Hemingway haunting his cat run estate… it was not the only place. One of La Concha’s claims to fame is that it is believed that Ernest Hemingway wrote "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Whether or not this part is genuine, La Concha likes to pride itself on that fact. They would even go as far as to believe that if something paranormal happens, it could be Hemingway. It is said his ghost frequents a hotel suite dubbed the Hemingway Suite.
Now some creepy elevator lore
Many report seeing an apparition of a bell boy roaming around the 5th floor of the hotel. For those who have seen his apparition have seen him wheeling a cart down the hall. Sometimes an elevator would stop on a floor with no one inside. Unfortunately, there is another ghost tied to that elevator.
There is a spirit of a busboy from the 1980s who fell to his death when he tried to get a cart into the elevator with only a five-story void to fall into. Noises can be heard around the hotel, with many people believing him to be among the spirits of the hotel. Some people even sense a strange presence around them.
Unfortunately, thirteen people have even taken their own lives at the hotel over the century. La Concha is the tallest building in Key West, so it is the likely reason that place was chosen.
Conclusion
Whether or not this place is actually haunted is up to the believers and the skeptics. For Ernest Hemingway, it could be possible that people are crossing their fingers that they do see a ghost of him. Throughout his life and time in Key West, he was known to frequent local businesses, so his spirit might want to swing by for old times ' sake.
